Jounen Kwéyòl

Jounen Kwéyòl, Creole Day, falls on the last Sunday of October and closes a month of Creole heritage events. Four communities are chosen each year to host, rotating around the island, and on the day those villages set up cooking on open fires along the streets: bouyon, green fig and saltfish, breadfruit, cassava bread, souse, all made outdoors and sold cheaply. People wear the madras national dress, Kwéyòl is spoken everywhere including on radio and by politicians who do not normally use it, and there is drumming, dancing and quadrille. It is the most genuinely local event on the Saint Lucian calendar.

When to go

The last Sunday in October. The four host communities are announced weeks ahead and change every year, so check which ones before planning. Cooking starts early and the villages are busiest through the middle of the day.

Honest expectations

The host villages change annually and are announced late, so this cannot be planned far in advance. The chosen villages are packed and parking is impossible; going early matters. It is a community celebration rather than a tourist event, which is the appeal but means no organised facilities.
