The King's Palace, Nyanza

At Nyanza stands a full-scale reconstruction of the traditional royal residence of the Rwandan court, a large domed structure of woven wood and thatch built with the techniques and proportions of the pre-colonial monarchy, with a milk hut and outbuildings around it. Guides explain the court's organisation, the role of milk and cattle in royal life, and the arrangement of the interior. Beside the compound are inyambo, the long-horned cattle bred for the court, whose horns curve to an extraordinary span and which are still trained to respond to praise poetry performed by their keepers, a demonstration that visitors can watch. A modern museum nearby covers the later colonial-era royal residence.

When to go

The drier months are easiest for travel. Visits are guided and take a couple of hours; the cattle demonstration depends on keepers being available, so arriving mid-morning is safest.

Honest expectations

This is a reconstruction rather than an original building, which some visitors find diminishes it; the value is in the craftsmanship and the explanation rather than in antiquity. It is a short visit and usually combined with Huye's ethnographic museum further south. Photography of the cattle demonstration is welcomed but the performers should be tipped.
