Spasskoye-Lutovinovo

Turgenev grew up here under a mother whose treatment of her serfs and her sons is recorded in some detail and which shaped what he later wrote. In 1852 he was arrested for an obituary of Gogol, held a month and then confined to the estate for nearly two years, and it was during and around that period that Sketches from a Hunter's Album, Rudin and A Nest of Gentlefolk took shape. The house burned in 1906 and was rebuilt in the 1970s, but a large part of the furniture, the library of some five thousand volumes and family things survived and are back in it. The park is the older element: about forty hectares of lime avenues laid out in the eighteenth century, ponds and oaks, including an oak he planted himself, which stood until a storm brought it down in 2021. Turgenev spent much of his adult life in France and died there in 1883.

May to September for the park. Half a day. Closed Mondays and the last Thursday of the month.

Honest expectations

The house is a 1970s reconstruction, though the contents are original. Visits inside are guided in Russian and timed. Public transport is limited; a car or a taxi from Mtsensk is the practical route. The oak he planted fell in 2021 and only the stump remains.
