Rodna Mountains National Park

The Rodna Mountains form the highest ground in the northern Carpathians, running east to west for about fifty kilometres and topping out at Pietrosul Rodnei, 2,303 metres. It is a quieter and emptier range than the Făgăraș or the Bucegi, with long approaches, few refuges and stretches of the main ridge where you will meet nobody all day. Glaciation left cirques and small lakes under the crest, including Iezer beneath Pietrosul, and the park is a UNESCO biosphere reserve with a scientific core closed to visitors. Marmots, reintroduced decades ago, whistle from the boulder fields, and chamois are common on the high ground. The northern side falls into Maramureș, where wooden villages and haymaking still shape the valleys, and the Prislop Pass road crosses the eastern end of the range, giving the only easy motorised view of the high country.

• The Prislop Pass - the road crossing at the eastern end, with high pasture views.

When to go

July to September for the ridge; snow lies late and returns early at this latitude and altitude. The Prislop road is open most of the year but closes in heavy snow. Weather from the north arrives fast and can be cold even in midsummer.

Honest expectations

Facilities are minimal: refuges are few, mostly basic, and cannot be relied on, so this is tent country. Approaches from the valleys are long and steep, and trail marking has gaps. Bears and wolves are present in numbers. The biosphere core zone is closed and routes through it are not permitted, which catches out people planning from old maps.

Borșa and the Vaser valley railway lie north; Vatra Dornei is east over the pass.
