Bran Castle

Bran Castle, perched dramatically on a rocky bluff at a mountain pass on the edge of Transylvania, is world-famous as the fabled home of Dracula. With its Gothic turrets, towers and warren of rooms rising against a forested backdrop, it fits the vampire legend perfectly, and its loose associations with both the fictional Count and the historical warlord Vlad the Impaler draw crowds. Beyond the myth, it is a genuinely atmospheric medieval fortress with a fascinating royal history of its own.

When to go

May to September for the best weather; go early to beat the tour crowds, which build through the day, and the atmospheric Halloween season draws vampire-themed events. Autumn brings mist and colour to the Carpathian setting.

Honest expectations

The Dracula connection is largely a marketing myth: the historical Vlad the Impaler had little real link to the castle, and Bram Stoker never visited, so temper expectations of a genuine vampire lair. It is small, crowded, and the approach is lined with souvenir stalls. It is, though, a genuinely atmospheric castle in a beautiful setting, best combined with the wider Transylvania region.
