The Museum of Islamic Art

The Museum of Islamic Art, standing on its own purpose-built island off the Doha Corniche, is one of the finest museums in the Middle East and a landmark in its own right. Designed by the celebrated architect I.M. Pei, its striking, geometric limestone form, inspired by ancient Islamic architecture, is a masterpiece rising from the waters of the bay. Inside, it houses one of the world's most comprehensive collections of Islamic art, spanning some fourteen centuries and three continents, from exquisite manuscripts, ceramics and textiles to metalwork, glass and jewels, beautifully displayed in serene, light-filled galleries.

It is a world-class art museum, so its appeal is chiefly for those interested in Islamic art, history and architecture rather than casual sightseers, though the stunning building and setting reward anyone; the collection is vast, so a focused visit works best. As both an architectural masterpiece and the home of one of the finest collections of Islamic art anywhere, beautifully presented, though, it is a genuine highlight of Doha and the Gulf.
