At Puerto Nuevo a line of rock runs parallel to the shore a short way out, and the water between it and the beach forms a natural pool: flat and shallow inside while the Atlantic breaks on the barrier a few metres away. That combination makes it one of the safest swimming spots on a north coast that is otherwise rough. It is a local beach with kiosks and a balneario, busy at weekends.

When to go
December to April is the drier season. High winter surf can wash over the barrier and make the pool rough. Weekends are crowded.
Honest expectations
On big north swells the pool is not calm and the barrier is dangerous. Facilities are basic and can be crowded. Parking fills early at weekends.
