Sado Estuary Dolphins

The Sado estuary holds a resident group of common bottlenose dolphins - not visitors passing through but animals that live here year-round, one of only a handful of resident estuarine populations in Europe. The group is small, numbering around thirty animals, and it has been studied continuously since the 1980s; numbers fell to about two dozen at their lowest and have recovered somewhat, but the population remains fragile, threatened by shipping traffic in and out of Setúbal, the industrial port, pollution and disturbance. Licensed operators run watching trips from Setúbal marina under rules limiting the number of boats, approach distance and time spent with the animals. Sightings are frequent but not guaranteed, and reputable operators say so before you board and offer a repeat trip rather than a promise. The estuary is a nature reserve and also a working industrial waterway.

When to go

April to October for sea conditions. Two to four hours per trip. Morning trips are usually calmer.

Honest expectations

Sightings are common but not guaranteed - be sceptical of anyone promising them. The population is small and vulnerable; choose licensed operators who keep distance rather than chase. Boats can be rough. The estuary shares water with heavy shipping.
