Quake Museum

On the morning of 1 November 1755, All Saints' Day, an earthquake now estimated at magnitude 8.5 or above struck off the Portuguese coast; Lisbon's churches were full, the shaking brought them down, a tsunami came up the Tagus within the hour, and fires burned for days in what was left. Tens of thousands died. The event reshaped the city under Pombal, who rebuilt the Baixa on a grid with the first earthquake-resistant framing in Europe, and it reshaped European thought - Voltaire, Rousseau and Kant all wrote about it, and the question of how a benevolent God permits such a thing became a defining argument of the Enlightenment. Quake, opened in 2022, walks visitors through this over about ninety minutes with sets, projection and a motion simulator that reproduces the shaking. It is a commercial immersive attraction built on a real and serious history.

Year-round. Ninety minutes on a timed ticket, booked in advance. Sessions run at intervals with fixed group sizes.

Honest expectations

It is an immersive commercial attraction, not a museum with collections - there are no original objects. The simulator is loud and shakes hard, which unsettles some visitors and small children. Timed entry only. Expensive relative to Lisbon's state museums.
