Fraga da Pena

Fraga da Pena is a series of drops in a narrow schist ravine on the northern flank of the Serra do Açor, falling in stages into pools with the rock walls dark and thick with moss and fern where the spray keeps them wet. A short marked path with wooden walkways and steps leads in from a car park, taking fifteen minutes, and viewing platforms sit at the base and partway up. The setting is part of the Mata da Margaraça, a protected remnant of the deciduous forest that once covered these mountains - oak, chestnut, holly, laurel - which survived because it was managed rather than cleared, and which is one of the few such fragments left in central Portugal. The 2017 fires that devastated this region burned much of the surrounding hillside, and the recovery is visible. Flow is seasonal and can be thin by late summer.

When to go

November to May for water volume; spring for the forest. One to two hours. By August the falls can be a trickle.

Honest expectations

Little water in late summer. Walkways are slippery when wet. The car park is small and the access road narrow. Fire damage in the surrounding hills is extensive and visible.
