Wawel Castle

Wawel Hill rises above the Vistula in Krakow, crowned by the royal castle and cathedral that together form the symbolic heart of Poland. For centuries the seat of the Polish kings, it holds a magnificent Renaissance palace, the cathedral where monarchs were crowned and buried, and, in legend, a dragon's den beneath the hill.

Background

The hill is a horst that formed in the Miocene epoch from Jurassic limestone of the Oxfordian age, and the castle stands on it at 228 metres above sea level on the left bank of the Vistula. Archaeological studies trace settlement back to the Middle Paleolithic, c. 100,000 years BC. Some of the oldest stone buildings date to 970 CE, alongside the earliest Romanesque and Gothic architecture in Poland. King Casimir III the Great ordered the castle established, and the present building dates from the 14th century. The museum, set up in 1930, has ten curatorial departments, and its oriental art includes Europe's largest collection of Ottoman tents. In 2025 it received over 3.47 million visitors.
