Wang Church
A Norwegian stave church of about 1200, bought by a Prussian king and moved plank by plank to the Karkonosze.

The Wang church was built around 1200 at Vang on Lake Vangsmjosa in Norway, in the stave technique - a timber frame of upright staves with carved portals and posts - and in the 1830s the parish, which needed a larger church, decided to pull it down. The painter Johan Christian Dahl, who was trying to save Norwegian stave churches, bought it at auction in 1841 and persuaded the future King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia to take it over; it was dismantled, shipped through Szczecin and hauled up to Karpacz, where it was re-erected in 1842 with a stone bell tower added to shelter it from the mountain wind. It is one of about thirty stave churches left in the world and the only one outside Scandinavia. The carving on the portals and capitals is Romanesque with Norse animal interlace in it. It stands at 885 metres among trees above Karpacz and is a working Lutheran parish church.
History
Built around 1200 in the parish of Vang in Valdres as a Catholic church, it later served the Church of Norway, and in 1832 the local council decided to pull it down because it was too small and had become unsafe. The painter Johan Christian Dahl bought it at auction in January 1841 for 86 speciedaler and persuaded Frederick William of Prussia to take it over; the architect Franz Wilhelm Schiertz surveyed and dismantled it, and it was re-erected in Karpacz in 1842 (Wikipedia, Vang Stave Church).
