Roztocze is a low ridge of limestone and sand running across the south of the Lublin region, wooded almost the whole way and cut by small, clear rivers. The national park protects its core around Zwierzyniec, where old beech and fir stands grow on slopes steep enough to feel like proper hills. The best known feature is the group of Polish konik horses kept in a reserve near the Echo Ponds, a chain of artificial pools with a sandy bathing beach at one end. Trails are short and well marked, the most popular climbing through beech woods to the open sandy crest of Bukowa Gora.
What you actually see
- The Echo Ponds - a chain of shallow pools below the forest, with a sand beach and a marked circuit around them.
- The konik horses - small primitive horses kept in a large reserve, visible from the fence line with patience.
- Bukowa Gora - a short climb through beech woods to a sandy ridge with the only open view in the park.
- The Wieprz valley - a slow clear river with alder banks running along the northern edge of the park.
When to go
May and early June for fresh beech leaf and birdsong, October for colour on the same slopes. July and August bring heat and the ponds become a local swimming spot, which fills the car parks by late morning. Spring and autumn weekdays are close to empty. The area is also good for night skies once you get away from Zwierzyniec.
Honest expectations
The park is small and the marked trails can be walked in a few hours, so it does not fill a long stay on its own. Ticks are a real problem from spring to autumn and the warnings are not decorative. Konik sightings are not guaranteed. In summer the Echo Ponds are crowded and noisy, and public transport out to the trailheads is limited.
Nearby
Zamosc and its arcaded old town are half an hour east, and the Roztocze ridge continues towards the Solska Forest.
