Bialowieza Bison Reserve

The European bison was extinct in the wild by 1927, the last free animal in Bialowieza shot in 1921, and the species survived only in about fifty animals in zoos and private collections; the restoration programme that brought it back to the forest was run from Bialowieza from 1929, and every living European bison descends from a dozen or so founders. The Rezerwat Pokazowy is the show enclosure a couple of kilometres from the village, where bison are kept in large paddocks along with tarpan-type konik horses, elk, wolves, deer and a bison-cattle hybrid, and it exists because the free-ranging herd in the forest is genuinely hard to see - people come to Bialowieza expecting bison and mostly do not find them. Here they are visible reliably. The enclosures are wooded and reasonably large, and the walk between them is a couple of kilometres of forest path.

Honest expectations

These are captive animals in enclosures, not wild sightings - some visitors find that disappointing. Wolves are often out of sight. The walk is exposed to weather. Weekends and holidays are busy.
