Tangadan Falls

Tangadan is the standard day off from La Union's surf. From San Gabriel the trek runs about twenty to thirty minutes along and through the river - boulder-hopping, wading, occasionally waist-deep - before the gorge opens into the lower fall's pool, a wide green basin with a curtain of water at one end and a cliff at the other. Guides ferry visitors across on bamboo rafts to sit under the fall itself, and the cliff is the reason many people come: jump points at several heights, the highest around ten metres, supervised by guides who check the water depth and the queue. A short scramble upstream reaches the second tier and quieter pools. The whole operation is community-run out of the barangay, with mandatory guides, life jackets and a registration desk, and it gets crowded on weekends when Manila's surf crowd rotates through.

When to go

November to May for safe water levels; the falls close after heavy rain when the river rises. Weekday mornings avoid both crowds and afternoon storms.

Good to know

Jumping is optional and guides will say when it is not safe - listen. Rocks are slippery and the trek is genuinely wet; leave valuables or bring a dry bag. Fees stack: registration, guide, raft, locker.
