Our Lady of the Gate - Nuestra Señora de la Porteria - stands on a low hill in the middle of Daraga, built of volcanic stone by Franciscans in the late eighteenth century and rebuilt and enlarged after the 1814 eruption of Mayon, when survivors from Cagsawa resettled here. The facade is the reason to come: heavily carved in a folk baroque manner, with twisted columns, saints in niches and reliefs cut into a pale volcanic rock that weathers to a rough, almost bone-coloured surface, unlike the brick of most Luzon churches. It was declared a National Cultural Treasure, and a restoration in the 2000s cleaned and stabilised the stone. From the terrace outside, Mayon rises beyond the town, which makes the church a second viewpoint on the same volcano the Cagsawa ruins frame. Inside, the church is plainer than the front suggests.

What you actually see

  • The carved facade - folk baroque cut in volcanic stone.
  • The hill terrace - the view over Daraga to Mayon.
  • The bell tower - the separate tower beside the church.
  • The plain interior - simpler than the exterior implies.

When to go

November to May; morning for the best chance of a clear Mayon behind. Weekday mornings are quiet, weekends busy with Masses and weddings.

Honest expectations

The volcano is often hidden in cloud. The church is a working parish and closes to visitors during services. Access to the hill is by a short steep road or steps.

Nearby

The Cagsawa ruins are ten minutes away; Legazpi, Sumlang Lake and the Camalig circuit are close.
