Arnis

Arnis - also called eskrima or kali, with the names carrying regional and historical distinctions that practitioners argue about - is the Filipino martial art built around the weapon first and the empty hand second. Training starts with a pair of rattan sticks, and the movements taught are blade movements: the art descends from bladed combat, and the stick is a training substitute rather than the original weapon, which is why the angles, the cutting lines and the emphasis on the hands as targets look the way they do. It was suppressed under Spanish rule, kept alive in dances and village practice, and formalised in the twentieth century into dozens of named systems - Doce Pares and Balintawak from Cebu, Modern Arnis, Pekiti-Tirsia and many more. A 2009 law declared it the national martial art and sport, and it is now part of the school curriculum. Cebu remains the centre, and several long-established gyms there take visiting students.

Honest expectations

The naming and lineage politics are real - systems differ substantially and practitioners disagree about history. Training is contact work and bruises are normal. Quality varies; ask about a school's lineage and teaching before committing.
