Llachón Peninsula

Llachón sits at the tip of the Capachica peninsula on the northern shore of Titicaca, and its advantage over the islands is simple: it is reached by road, so an overnight there does not require four hours of boat travel. Several families run homestays, part of a community tourism association that developed from the 1990s, and the arrangement is straightforward - a room in a family house, meals of what the family grows, and the option of helping with farm work, taking a sailing boat out, or walking to the headland viewpoints over the lake. Quechua is the first language, terraced fields run down to the water, and the peninsula is dotted with small beaches. It is often combined with Amantaní and Taquile as a triangle by boat. Facilities are basic and the point is the stay rather than any attraction.

When to go

April to November. One or two nights; there is little to do in a shorter visit. Two hours by road from Puno, or by boat from Amantaní.

Good to know

Very basic accommodation - cold rooms, simple food, limited hot water. Nothing to see in the conventional sense; the experience is staying with a family. Nights at 3,850 metres are severely cold. Little English is spoken.
