Huaca Centinela

La Centinela was the capital of the Chincha, a coastal kingdom that dominated the valley from around 1000 AD and built its wealth on trade - long-distance seaborne exchange along the Pacific coast, reportedly with fleets of balsa rafts, dealing in Spondylus shell and metal goods. Spanish accounts record that the lord of Chincha travelled with Atahualpa at Cajamarca in 1532 and was carried in a litter, an honour granted to almost nobody, which reflects how the Inca had incorporated the kingdom - by alliance and accommodation rather than conquest. The site is a complex of adobe pyramids, plazas and enclosures near the sea, with Inca-period construction built alongside and on top of Chincha work, and remains of painted decoration in places. It has suffered from erosion, earthquakes, encroachment and looting, and is much less presented than comparable sites further north.

When to go

Year-round; coastal cloud makes mornings grey from June to October. One to two hours. Confirm access locally, as staffing is irregular.

Honest expectations

Little presented for visitors - limited signage, few facilities, and no guaranteed guide. Earthquake and looting damage is extensive. The adobe reads as eroded mounds in places. Access arrangements change; check in Chincha before going.
