Colonia Independencia

Colonia Independencia was founded in 1919 by German settlers in the hills east of Villarrica, and the colony kept its language and much of its character through the century: German is still heard, the bakeries and butchers work in that tradition, and the annual beer festival in the town is a fixture. Vineyards on the slopes produce wine on a small scale and can be visited. The setting is the reason to stay: the Ybytyruzu hills rise directly behind with Salto Suizo, the country's tallest waterfall, Cerro Tres Kandu, its highest point, and the Ita Letra petroglyphs all within reach, and the Tebicuary river runs below with swimming spots.

When to go

April to October in the cooler dry months for the hills and the walking; the beer festival falls in the cooler season. Summer is hot and humid. Weekends bring visitors from Villarrica and Asuncion.

Honest expectations

The colony is a small town with limited accommodation and restaurants. Vineyard visits need arranging. The waterfalls and hills need a vehicle and local guidance. Facilities are basic.
