Taqah castle is not a fortress but the fortified residence of the wali, the local governor, built in the nineteenth century in the middle of a Dhofari fishing town, and its interest is domestic: the rooms have been furnished as they would have been used, with the majlis for receiving visitors, the kitchen with its cooking arrangements, storerooms, sleeping quarters and a school room, along with two towers and a small prison. Photographs and household objects fill out the picture of a nineteenth-century Dhofari household. The building is compact and the visit short. Taqah itself is a working fishing town with a beach, and Sumhuram lies a short distance east.

What you actually see

  • The furnished majlis - the reception room as it was used.
  • Kitchen and stores - the domestic working rooms of the household.
  • The towers - the small defensive elements and the roof view.
  • Taqah town - the fishing settlement around the castle.

When to go

October to April for the clearest weather; khareef from late June to early September brings mist and crowds to Dhofar. Daytime opening hours apply with a Friday restriction.

Honest expectations

The castle is small and the visit takes under an hour. Restoration and furnishing are interpretive rather than original. Signage is limited. It works best combined with Sumhuram and Wadi Darbat on the same trip east.

Nearby

Sumhuram lies east; Wadi Darbat is inland above the town.
