Tungeneset

Tungeneset is a rest stop on the Senja scenic route where a walkway of Siberian pine runs out over rough, broken coastal rock to a viewing point, and the view it frames is the Okshornan, the ox horns, a row of sharp peaks running along the far side of the Ersfjord like a jagged wall. The walkway, designed by the architects Code, follows the shape of the rock rather than levelling it, so it rises and falls with the ground. Waves break on the rocks below in any swell. The stop is small, a car park and the walkway with toilets, and takes half an hour, but it is among the most photographed points on the Senja route and works in both the midnight sun and winter darkness.

When to go

May to September for easy access and the midnight sun; the road is kept open in winter and the site works for aurora, though conditions can be severe. Storm days give the best sea.

Good to know

This is a twenty-minute roadside stop, not a destination, and the car park is small and fills in summer. The rock beyond the walkway is uneven and slippery. Wind and spray are constant on this coast.
