Traenafestivalen

Traenafestivalen has run since 2003 on an island group thirty-three nautical miles out in the Norwegian Sea, and its scale relative to its setting is the point: a few thousand visitors arrive by boat at islands with four hundred residents, camping on the rock and filling the harbour for three or four days in early July. The programming mixes Norwegian and international acts across genres. The signature event is a concert held inside Kirkehelleren, a vast cave opening on the island of Sanna, reached by boat and a steep climb, where the audience sits on the rock floor under a roof of stone. Midnight sun means the concerts run through what should be night.

History

People first settled these islands about nine thousand years ago, drawn by the rich sea rather than by farmland, and the community of about 400 has long lived from exporting fish (Wikipedia, Traena Music Festival). A smaller festival, mainly for residents, ran here from 1978 to 1998, and the present festival was founded in 2003; in 2012 it was named Norway's festival of the year (Norwegian Wikipedia, Trænafestivalen).

When to go

Early July, the fixed festival dates; tickets and boat places sell out and must be arranged together, as transport capacity limits attendance. The weather is unpredictable and can be cold and wet even in July.

Practical notes

Getting there takes hours on open water and crossings can be rough. Accommodation is mostly camping or shared space, and facilities are stretched. The cave concert requires a boat transfer and a steep climb, and places for it are limited.
