Ravnkloa Fish Market

Ravnkloa has been the fish landing point for Trondheim since the eighteenth century, at the point where Munkegata, the main axis running from Nidaros Cathedral, reaches the water. The fish hall there is small and functional, selling fresh cod, halibut, salmon, shellfish and prepared fish products over the counter, with a cafe serving fish soup, fish cakes and open sandwiches that locals use for lunch rather than tourists queuing for a photograph. Outside stands a fish sculpture and the quay where the Munkholmen boat leaves in summer. It is a working market rather than a food-hall attraction, which is its main difference from the equivalent in Bergen.

When to go

Year-round; the hall opens on weekdays and Saturday mornings with reduced hours later in the day. Lunchtime is when it is busiest and freshest, and the Munkholmen boat runs from the quay in summer.

Honest expectations

The market is small, essentially one hall, and takes half an hour. It closes early and on Sundays. Visitors expecting a large covered food market like Bergen's will find something much more modest.
