- Greet with Hafa Adai - the Chamorro hello is used everywhere and always returned
- Greet elders first and defer to them - age carries real authority
- Dress modestly for church - Catholic services anchor village life on Saipan, Tinian and Rota
- Accept food if invited to a village fiesta - sharing the table is the whole point
✗ Better avoided
- Skip the greeting and get straight to business - island courtesy comes first
- Wear beachwear into shops or churches
- Climb on latte stones or disturb ancient sites - they are treated as resting places of ancestors
- Rush people - island time is real and impatience gets you nowhere
💡 Worth knowing
- The US dollar is the currency and tipping runs American-style, 10-15% in restaurants
- ATMs are easy on Saipan but carry cash for mom-and-pop stores and roadside fruit stands
- The Thursday night street market in Garapan is the weekly social event
- US immigration rules apply, though the CNMI runs its own separate visa-waiver list
