Berovo lies at around eight hundred metres in the Maleševo mountains in the far east, surrounded by pine forest that makes the air noticeably different from the valleys, and it has been a summer retreat on that basis for a long time. Berovo cheese, a white brined cheese made in the surrounding villages, has a national reputation. A lake above the town, an artificial reservoir, is used for swimming and boating, and the monastery of Saint Archangel Michael stands in the town.

When to go
May to October is the season, with summer the busiest as people come for the air. Winter brings snow and some skiing. Autumn colour in the forest is good.
Honest expectations
The town is remote from the main routes and roads in are slow. Facilities are modest. The lake is artificial and its surroundings are developed.
