Waitaki Valley Wine Region
A very small, very new limestone wine district on the North Otago river flats, with only a handful of producers.

The first commercial vines went in here around 2001, which makes this one of the newest wine districts in the country, and it is still tiny - a handful of producers on limited plantings along the Waitaki River between Duntroon and Kurow. What drew growers is the geology: a band of Oligocene limestone runs through the valley, the same formation that produces the Elephant Rocks and the Maori rock art shelters nearby, and the comparison people reach for is Burgundy. Pinot noir, riesling and pinot gris are the plantings. The climate is marginal - frost is a real annual risk and some vintages are lost - which keeps volumes low and prices high. Cellar doors are few and mostly by appointment. The valley is worth driving for other reasons anyway: the limestone formations, the rock art, the hydro lakes and Kurow itself, so the wine is one thread of a day rather than the whole of it.
What you actually see
- The limestone - the Oligocene band that drew growers here.
- The pinot noir and riesling - the varieties suited to a marginal climate.
- The scale - a handful of producers, planted since 2001.
- The valley - rock formations, rock art and hydro lakes along the same road.
When to go
November to April. Cellar doors are limited and mostly by appointment - arrange visits before driving up the valley. Frost risk means vintage variation is real.
Honest expectations
Very small, with few cellar doors and irregular opening. Wines are expensive for the region because volumes are low. Do not plan a wine-only day here; combine it with the valley's other stops.
Nearby
The Elephant Rocks and Takiroa rock art are in the valley; Oamaru is at the coast.
