Tamaki Maori Village

Tamaki is a constructed village in forest south of Rotorua, built by two brothers in 1989 to present Maori culture as an evening experience, and it has run since as one of the larger operations of its kind. The format is fixed: coach pickup, a formal welcome at the gate with a wero challenge and a powhiri, a walk through the village where stations demonstrate carving, weaving, poi, stick games and haka, then a concert in the wharenui, then a hangi meal lifted from the earth oven. It is a commercial product and does not pretend otherwise - the village exists for visitors, unlike Whakarewarewa where people live. The counterargument, which the operators make, is that it is Maori-owned and staffed by people teaching their own culture, and it employs a substantial number of them. Whether that is the experience you want is worth deciding before booking; the alternative is the living village in town.

When to go

Any season, evenings only. Book ahead - it runs at capacity in summer. Transport from Rotorua accommodation is included and sets the timing.

Things to know

It is a purpose-built commercial experience, not a place where people live - for that, Whakarewarewa Living Village is the alternative. It is a fixed four-hour programme with a large group; there is no wandering.
