Just below the point where Lake Taupo empties into the Waikato River, the channel narrows from a broad, lazy stretch into a hard-walled slot of pale rock only a few metres across. The whole river has to go through it. The result is not a tall waterfall but a short, violent one: a chute of turquoise water moving at speed, throwing up white spray, before dropping a last few metres into a pool that churns and turns over on itself. A footbridge crosses directly above the top of the chute, and a path runs along the rim to lower viewpoints downstream. The colour comes from the water itself, which is unusually clear.

What you actually see

  • The chute - the river squeezed into a narrow rock channel and forced through at speed.
  • The footbridge - the crossing directly above the top of the falls.
  • The rim path - the walkway downstream to viewpoints over the churning pool.
  • The riverside walk - the track back towards Taupo, passing a hot stream that joins the river.

When to go

The falls run hard all year and never freeze or dry up, so time of day matters more than season. Morning light comes from upstream and shows the colour of the water best. The car park fills with coaches through the middle of the day and the bridge is narrow, so early or late visits are calmer. Winter mornings are cold but often clear.

Honest expectations

It is a short stop, twenty minutes for most people, and the viewing is entirely from fenced platforms and a bridge, with no way down to the water. The car park and bridge get crowded. Jet boats run up to the pool through the day, which some visitors find intrusive. The drop is small, so anyone expecting height rather than volume tends to be underwhelmed.

Nearby

Taupo and the lake are minutes upstream, with the Wairakei thermal ground close by.
