Forteiland Pampus was built between 1887 and 1895 on an artificial island in the IJmeer as the seaward strongpoint of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, the ring of forty-odd forts and flooding works around the city that is on the UNESCO list. It is an armoured fort: a concrete and iron structure with two rotating turrets, designed to close the last open approach to Amsterdam when the surrounding land was deliberately flooded. It was effectively obsolete by the time it opened, since artillery had already outrun its protection, and it never fired in anger. The name comes from the shoal it stands on, which sailing ships had to wait for the tide to cross - the Dutch expression voor Pampus liggen, to lie before Pampus, means to be laid out flat, and comes from that waiting. It is reached only by ferry and has a restaurant and events.

What you actually see

  • An armoured island fort - concrete and iron with rotating turrets, built 1887-1895.
  • Obsolete on completion - artillery had already outrun its protection.
  • Part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam - the UNESCO-listed ring of forts and flooding.
  • The origin of a Dutch idiom - voor Pampus liggen, from ships waiting on the shoal.

When to go

May to September. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Ferry only, seasonal, weather-dependent, and it books up - there is no other way on or off. Interiors are cold and damp. Events sometimes close the island to general visitors.

Nearby

Muiderslot castle is at the ferry point; Amsterdam is west.
