Kasteel Ruurlo

Carel Willink painted precise, cold, technically immaculate pictures of empty squares, classical buildings and solitary figures under enormous skies, in a style usually called Dutch magic realism - recognisably realist in handling and entirely unreal in atmosphere - and he was one of the most successful Dutch painters of the mid-twentieth century. Kasteel Ruurlo, a moated castle of medieval origin rebuilt in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, was restored and opened in 2017 by the Hans Melchers foundation to hold the largest Willink collection anywhere, with around fifty works shown in the castle rooms, along with other Dutch realist painters. It pairs with Museum MORE at Gorssel nearby, run by the same foundation, which covers Dutch modern realism more broadly. The castle grounds have a park and a garden restored with the building.

Honest expectations

Closed Mondays. The collection is one painter and a narrow movement, which is either the appeal or the limitation. Ruurlo is in the Achterhoek and needs a train or car. The companion museum is a separate ticket.
