Frederiksoord

After the Napoleonic wars the northern Netherlands had mass urban poverty, and in 1818 General Johannes van den Bosch founded the Society of Benevolence with a plan: buy waste heath in Drenthe, divide it into smallholdings with a standard cottage on each, and settle poor families there to farm their way out of destitution under supervision. Frederiksoord was the first colony. The scheme spread to seven sites in the Netherlands and Belgium and lasted in some form until the twentieth century; the free colonies like this one were voluntary, while others became coercive institutions for beggars and vagrants. The Colonies of Benevolence were inscribed by UNESCO in 2021 as an experiment in social reform written into a landscape - the straight roads, the standard cottages, the schools and the plot pattern are all still legible here, with a museum in the society's own building.

Honest expectations

The interest is a pattern in the landscape, which takes reading and a map. The museum closes on Mondays. The coercive colonies at Veenhuizen are a separate and harder story. Public transport is limited.
