Eusebius Church

The Eusebiuskerk was built between 1452 and 1560 as the main church of Arnhem, and in September 1944 it stood at the centre of the battle for the Arnhem bridge; the tower was hit repeatedly and collapsed, and the church was left a shell. Rebuilding took until 1964 for the fabric and much longer for the tower, which was reconstructed with a modern top rather than a copy of the original. In 2019 three glass balconies were cantilevered out from the tower at about sixty metres - transparent floors projecting into open air over the city, reached by a panoramic lift, which is now the main reason people come. The church below holds the tomb of Charles the Bold's daughter's family line and a monument to the Dukes of Guelders, along with exhibitions. From the balconies the John Frost bridge and the whole battle ground are laid out.

Honest expectations

The balconies have glass floors and genuinely unsettle some people. The lift and balconies close in high wind. Timed tickets. The church interior is a shell of postwar reconstruction rather than surviving medieval fabric.
