Sandwich Harbour
The place where the Namib's dunes fall straight into the Atlantic, reached only by four-wheel-drive along the beach between tides.

South of Walvis Bay the coastal road ends and the Namib simply arrives at the sea, with dunes several hundred metres high dropping directly into the Atlantic surf, and Sandwich Harbour is where that meeting is at its most dramatic. Getting there means driving south along the beach itself in a four-wheel-drive, timed to the tide, because at high water the sea reaches the dune feet and the route closes, and then climbing onto the dunes to look down at the wetland lagoon beyond, once a harbour and now a protected wetland fed by fresh water seeping under the sand, which draws flamingos and waders. The driving is a large part of the experience, with guides letting tyres down and running along dune faces. It is inside the Namib-Naukluft park and permits and local knowledge are compulsory, which is why it is done with an operator.
What you actually see
- Dunes into the ocean - the Namib falling straight into the Atlantic surf.
- The lagoon - the freshwater-fed wetland behind the dunes with its birds.
- The beach drive - the tide-timed run south along the sand.
- Dune driving - the descents and traverses on the dune faces.
When to go
Year-round, but every trip is built around the tide table rather than the calendar, so departure times shift daily and are set by the operator. Mornings are usually calmer. Fog is common on this coast and can hide the view entirely, which is a genuine risk on any given day.
Honest expectations
This is not a self-drive destination: the beach route floods, vehicles get stuck and drowned every year, and permits and experience are required, so go with a licensed operator and accept it when they cancel. Coastal fog can obscure everything, and there is no refund for weather. Those prone to motion sickness will find the dune driving hard going.
Nearby
Walvis Bay lagoon is to the north; Swakopmund is an hour away.
