Gran Teatro Cervantes

The Cervantes was built in 1913 by a Spanish couple, Manuel Peña and Esperanza Orellana, as a theatre for the Spanish community of Tangier, with 1,400 seats and a facade decorated with a large ceramic panel by the Sevillian workshops. In the international-zone decades it was the city's principal venue, hosting opera, zarzuela, flamenco and boxing, and it closed in the 1970s. What followed was fifty years of decay: the roof failed, the interior was gutted by weather, ownership sat with the Spanish state, and successive announcements of restoration came to nothing while the building visibly disintegrated in the middle of the city. In 2019 Spain transferred it to Morocco and restoration work began in the 2020s. Until that finishes it is a facade behind hoarding - the tiled panel is still visible - and it stands as the most-cited example of Tangier's neglected twentieth-century fabric.

Spring and autumn. Half an hour; the exterior only until works finish.

Honest expectations

It is closed and behind hoarding - there is no interior access during restoration. Completion dates have slipped repeatedly over decades. The street is ordinary and the visit is a look at a facade. Check for news before making a detour.
