Agadir's marina was built in the 2000s at the northern end of the bay, where the beach meets the port - a yacht basin surrounded by low white buildings in a uniform style with restaurants, cafes, boutiques and apartments, laid out to be walked. Boat trips leave from here, from short bay cruises to fishing and dolphin-watching runs. Above it on the hill stands the Agadir Oufella kasbah, of which almost nothing survives: the city was destroyed in the earthquake of 29 February 1960, which killed something in the order of fifteen thousand people in a few seconds and flattened the old town, and the hillside above the marina is where the old city was, with a memorial and a cable car built in 2022 to reach it. The whole of modern Agadir was rebuilt afterwards on new ground, which is why it looks like nowhere else in Morocco.

What you actually see

  • A uniform white quarter - low buildings round a yacht basin, built in the 2000s.
  • Boat trips - bay cruises, fishing and dolphin-watching runs from the pontoons.
  • The kasbah hill above - where the old city stood before the 1960 earthquake.
  • A cable car - built in 2022 to reach the memorial and the hill.

When to go

October to May. Two to three hours.

Honest expectations

It is a modern development with no historic fabric - Agadir's old town no longer exists. Restaurant prices here are the highest in the city. Boat operators vary; agree terms first. The bay is windy in the afternoon.

Nearby

Agadir's beach promenade runs south; the Souss estuary is beyond it.
