✓ Considered polite
- Say good morning or good afternoon before any request - greetings come first
- Wave back at drivers and walkers - people acknowledge each other on the road
- Take time for small talk in shops - transactions are social visits first
- Dress up a little if invited to church - Sunday service is a social institution
✗ Better avoided
- Wear beachwear away from the beach - cover up in villages and shops
- Expect much open on Sunday - church comes first and the island goes quiet
- Look for nightlife or big-resort polish - the island runs on quiet rhythms
- Rush conversations - island time is real and politeness is unhurried
Worth knowing
- The Eastern Caribbean dollar is the currency; US dollars are widely accepted and change comes back in EC
- A 10% service charge is usually already on restaurant bills - extra tips are optional
- St Patrick's Day is a public holiday - Montserrat is the only country outside Ireland to observe it - with a week of festival in March
- Access is via Antigua by short flight or ferry - both are small and worth booking ahead
