Velas del Istmo

The Isthmus of Tehuantepec runs on its own social calendar, and the vela is its engine: a neighbourhood or trade society's annual fiesta, spread across days of mass, procession, dancing and formal drinking, hosted by mayordomos who spend a year preparing. The look is famous - Zapotec women in velvet or satin huipiles embroidered edge to edge with enormous flowers, gold-coin necklaces layered at the throat, hair braided with ribbon and crowned in fresh blooms - and so is the choreography: the regada de frutas parade of decorated carts and horses tossing fruit, the lavada de olla that closes the cycle, brass bands and sones istmeños played until dawn, and the tirada de frutas from balconies. The Isthmus is also known for the visible standing of its women in commerce and society, and for the muxes - a recognized third gender in Zapotec life whose own vela in Juchitan each November draws visitors from far outside the region. When to go

May concentrates the great velas of Juchitan and Tehuantepec; November brings the Vela de las Intrepidas. Ask locally which society hosts when - dates are neighbourhood matters.

Honest expectations

These are community fiestas, not shows: attend by invitation or ticket, dress up, bring the customary gift, and follow your hosts' lead. Photography of individuals needs permission. Heat on the Isthmus is serious; the nights are long.
