The classic buys
Talavera from Puebla
The certified workshops' tin-glazed pottery with DO4-numbered marks - the certification exists because the fakes are everywhere.
Silver from Taxco
The silver city's jewellery stamped 925 with maker's marks - workshops beat resort boutiques by half.
Textiles by region
Oaxacan rugs from Teotitlan's looms (natural dyes demonstrated), Chiapas embroidery, rebozos from Tenancingo - buy from weavers and cooperatives.
Mezcal and tequila
Small-producer mezcal from Oaxaca's palenques and estate tequilas - the export-label rules mean airport buys are legal-simple.

Check before you buy
- Pre-Hispanic artefacts cannot leave Mexico - and 'ancient' figurines sold at ruins are fakes with legal risk attached anyway.
- Real vanilla is never cheap - the market-stall bargain bottles are synthetic tonka blends.
- Agave spirits count against allowances fast - and unlabelled palenque jugs will not fly; buy bottled with labels.
✗ Better left behind
- 'Aztec' calendars and figurines sold as ancient - replicas are legal, 'originals' are either crimes or lies.
- Turtle oil, coral and reptile-skin items in beach towns - protected trade.
Markets shift, workshops close and open, and the best souvenir is still the one with a story you were there for. Buy from makers where you can, keep receipts for anything substantial, and when a deal feels too good, it usually is.
