El Potrero Chico is a narrow canyon cut through limestone walls that rise hundreds of metres on both sides, twenty minutes from the town of Hidalgo, and since the 1990s it has been one of the world's best-known winter sport-climbing destinations. The rock is featured, steep and generously bolted: several hundred routes range from single-pitch warmups near the road to long multi-pitch lines - the most famous, a 23-pitch route climbing some 700 metres to the rim, is a rite of passage for visiting parties. What makes it distinctive is the combination of scale, accessibility and season: while northern winters shut down, Potrero delivers dry, mild days from November to March, and the campgrounds and hostels at the canyon mouth fill with an international community that climbs by day and eats tacos in Hidalgo by night. Non-climbers can drive or walk into the canyon for the walls themselves, a swimming hole, and the sight of headlamps descending the big routes after dark. Summer is hot enough to empty the place entirely.

What you actually see

  • The canyon walls - limestone rising hundreds of metres.
  • The multi-pitch lines - parties strung up the big routes.
  • The camps - the international winter climbing community.
  • The road walk - the whole gorge accessible on foot.

When to go

November to March is the season - dry, mild and busy. Summer is too hot to climb comfortably and the canyon empties.

Honest expectations

Bolts and rock quality vary by route and age - climbers should check current information and carry their own judgment. There is no rescue service on call. Non-climbers get scenery and atmosphere but little else; an hour or two suffices.

Nearby

The Grutas de Garcia caves are minutes away; Monterrey and its parks lie southeast.
