Lucha Libre

Lucha libre has been a Mexican institution since the 1930s, and it is not quite wrestling as elsewhere: the style is faster and more acrobatic, built on high flying and rapid sequences, and the mask is central. A luchador's identity lives in it, masks are inherited and defended, and a mask-versus-mask match, where the loser is unmasked and must reveal his name, is the most serious stake in the sport. The moral order is simple, with técnicos as the clean fighters and rudos as the cheats, and the crowd takes sides loudly and rudely. Arena México in the capital, the so-called cathedral, holds the big Friday night cards. Masks are sold outside, and children wear them in the stands.

Year-round, with the biggest cards in Mexico City on Friday nights at Arena México and Tuesday nights at Arena Coliseo. Tickets are cheap and can be bought at the box office, though the big annual events sell out. Shows run late, ending near midnight.

Honest expectations

Photography rules inside vary and have been restricted at times, with staff enforcing them. The neighbourhood around Arena México is fine going in with the crowd but ordinary caution applies leaving late; taxis booked through an app are the sensible option. The tourist packages that bundle a ticket with drinks cost several times the door price.
