Actopan Monastery

The Augustinian monastery of San Nicolas de Tolentino at Actopan, begun in 1546 where the Mezquital valley meets the hills, is first a fortress - a single square tower with Moorish echoes, battlemented walls, a vast atrium - and then, inside, one of the finest surviving mural programmes of early colonial Mexico. The stairwell is the celebrated set piece: three storeys of black-and-red frescoes in grisaille, portraying Augustinian hermits, doctors of the church and founders in an architecture of painted niches, executed by indigenous artists trained on European engravings. Corridors, refectory and sala continue the cycle by the hundred square metres. Outside, the open chapel's colossal barrel vault - among the largest of its kind - carries an apocalyptic Last Judgment whose hell scenes, monsters and cosmologies mix Mesoamerican and European imagery. Visitors are usually few.

When to go

Dry-season mornings for raking light on the facade and comfortable fresco-gazing; any day but the INAH Monday closure. Actopan's Wednesday market adds Mezquital life - and its famous barbacoa - to the visit.

Things to know

Lighting inside is kept conservation-dim; give your eyes time. Interpretation is Spanish and scholarly where present. The town around is workaday Mezquital - the monastery is the destination.

Ixmiquilpan's church - with its extraordinary indigenous battle murals - lies up the road; the Tolantongo canyons and Pachuca frame the wider loop.
