EntryCommunity fees; visits by arrangement

Namdrik in the southern Ralik chain is one of the few Marshallese atolls whose lagoon is completely enclosed with no pass to the ocean, which makes the water inside a distinct system. It is a Ramsar wetland and the community manages giant clam and pearl farming alongside its copra. Around eight hundred people live on two islets and the atoll has won recognition for its conservation work. The atoll is one of the smallest in the country, with only two islets of any size on the ring.

What you actually see

  • The enclosed lagoon - water with no pass to the open ocean.
  • The Ramsar status - protection covering the whole atoll system.
  • The clam and pearl farming - the community's managed aquaculture.
  • The community management - the conservation work the atoll is known for.

When to go

December to April is the drier season. Flights and ships are irregular. The wet season brings heavier weather.

Honest expectations

Transport is irregular and getting stuck is normal. There is no accommodation beyond community arrangements. Sea level rise is a serious and immediate concern for the atoll.

Nearby

Ebon is southeast, and Jaluit is northeast.
