Pinang Peranakan Mansion

This green-painted mansion on Church Street was the home of a nineteenth-century Chinese merchant, and it has been restored and refilled as a museum of Straits Chinese, or Peranakan, domestic life. The plan is the classic courtyard house: an entrance hall, a light well open to the sky, and rooms running back on both floors. What fills it is the point, more than a thousand pieces of blackwood furniture inlaid with mother of pearl, English floor tiles and Scottish ironwork, Nyonya porcelain in pink and green, beaded slippers, gold jewellery and elaborate wedding dress. An adjoining wing holds an ancestral hall and a jewellery gallery. Together they give a concrete picture of a hybrid culture that produced its own food, dress and language.

When to go

Open daily in daytime hours, with free guided commentary at set times worth timing your arrival for. Mid-morning is best, since coach groups arrive around midday and the rooms are narrow. Allow two hours to include the jewellery gallery. George Town is walkable, so this slots easily into a heritage-street day.

Honest expectations

Rooms are cramped and become uncomfortable when a group is inside; photography without other visitors is close to impossible in high season. The ticket is on the expensive side for Malaysia. Some of the furnishing was assembled from collections rather than original to the house, which purists mind. Guided commentary runs only at fixed times and is rushed when busy.
