Muzium Negara, Kuala Lumpur

Muzium Negara opened in 1963 in a purpose-built hall whose long pitched roof and gable ends borrow from Malay palace architecture, with two large mosaic murals across the front facade showing scenes of trade, craft and daily life. Four permanent galleries run in sequence: prehistory, drawing on material from the peninsula's excavated valleys and the Borneo caves; the early Malay kingdoms and the Melaka sultanate; the centuries of Portuguese, Dutch and British trade; and the twentieth century. Outside stand transplanted timber houses, old locomotives and a reconstructed tin dredge. Temporary exhibitions occupy a side wing. It makes a reasonable half day and is the obvious first stop for anyone who wants the sequence before visiting the sites themselves.

When to go

Open daily through the day. Weekday mornings are quiet; weekends bring school and family groups. Allow three hours for the four galleries, more if a temporary exhibition is running. The walk from KL Sentral crosses a busy road system, so the covered route or a short taxi is easier in the heat.

Honest expectations

The permanent displays are dated in places, with long text panels and static cases, and English labelling thins out in some rooms. Lighting is dim in the prehistory gallery. The building sits a walk from anywhere useful and the surrounding roads are unfriendly on foot. It gives context rather than spectacle, and anyone hoping for a modern interactive museum will be disappointed.
