Lok Kawi opened in 2007 on about a hundred and eighty hectares south of Kota Kinabalu and is run by the Sabah Wildlife Department, which makes it the state's official zoo and a holding facility for confiscated and rescued animals as well as a public attraction. The collection is strongly regional, which is the reason to go: Borneo pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, orangutans, sun bears, clouded leopards, tembadau, hornbills and a large reptile and bird section, alongside some non-native species. There is a botanical section and a children's area. Enclosure standards vary and the park has drawn criticism over the years, particularly around elephant shows and enclosure sizes, some of which has led to changes; the honest position is that it is improving from a low base.

What you actually see

  • Borneo pygmy elephants - the subspecies found only on this island.
  • Proboscis monkeys - the long-nosed Borneo endemic in enclosures.
  • Rescued and confiscated animals - the department's holding role alongside display.
  • A botanical section - planted grounds and a children's area.

When to go

All year; early morning when animals are active and it is cooler. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Enclosure standards are uneven and the park has been criticised for animal welfare, with changes made in response. It is hot and spread out. Some animals are inactive in the middle of the day.

Nearby

Kota Kinabalu is north; Papar and the coast are south.
