Larochette Castle

Larochette castle sits on a sandstone crag about a hundred and fifty metres above the town, a site occupied from the eleventh century that grew into a complex holding several separate family residences inside one enclosure. It burned in the sixteenth century and was left, and of the houses two survive in part, the Homburg and the Créhange, the latter restored. The rock the castle stands on is the same sandstone that shapes the Mullerthal below.

History

The castle is first recorded at the end of the 11th century, and in the 12th century its lords were standard-bearers of the counts of Luxembourg; as the family grew it built five separate manor houses within the walls, among them the Homburg manor of 1350 (Wikipedia, Larochette Castle).

When to go

April to October is the main season; winter opening is limited. The climb up is short but steep. Autumn colour in the valley is good.

Much of the site is ruin with limited interpretation. Opening hours are seasonal and restricted. The town below is small with few facilities.
