Getting thereAt Kabaw in the Jebel Nafusa; road access from the mountain road
EntrySmall fee

The qasr at Kabaw is a communal granary of the same tradition as Qasr al-Haj but built on an irregular plan, with storage cells stacked several storeys high around courtyards and passages, faced in mud plaster over stone with palm-trunk beams projecting as steps. Each cell belonged to a family and held grain, oil and dates. The whole structure reads as a single mass of small openings, and it has been partly restored.

What you actually see

  • The stacked cells - storage rooms several storeys high around the courtyards.
  • The projecting beams - the palm trunks set into the walls as steps.
  • The mud plaster - the finish over the stone construction.
  • The family ownership - the system by which each cell belonged to a household.

When to go

March to May and October to November are the comfortable months. Summer in the Nafusa is hot. Access depends on the keyholder.

Honest expectations

Access depends on finding the keyholder and hours are informal. Parts of the structure are unstable. Travel in Libya requires arrangements through a licensed operator.

Nearby

Nalut is west, and Qasr al-Haj is east.
