The lighthouse at Uzava stands on a dune above the open Baltic on the western Kurzeme shore, a round white tower of about nineteen metres put up in 1879 in brick and rebuilt after damage, with the keeper's buildings beside it and pine and marram grass around. What makes it worth the drive is the isolation: the coast here is empty, the beach runs for kilometres in both directions with nothing on it, and the tower is the only vertical thing in the landscape. Climbing is not routinely available and is arranged when it is. The beach below is sand and shingle with driftwood, used by walkers and for amber searching after storms.

When to go
May to September for the beach and the walking; autumn storms bring amber and driftwood ashore. The coast is windy year round. Sunset over the open sea is the best light.
Honest expectations
The tower is not routinely open to climb. There are no facilities at the site. The access track through the dunes is sandy. The coast is exposed and cold in wind.
