Muang Khua

Muang Khua is built on the steep bank where the Nam Phak joins the Nam Ou, a small town of a few streets that most travellers see because it is where the boat stops. A long suspension footbridge crosses the smaller river to the far bank, swaying enough to be memorable, and a second bridge carries the road. The market runs early, the guesthouses are simple, and the town's rhythm is set by the boats and the buses towards the Vietnamese border a couple of hours east.

What you actually see

• The footbridge - a long narrow suspension span over the Nam Phak, used by motorbikes and walkers.
• The confluence - the Nam Phak meeting the Nam Ou below the town.
• The market - a small morning market on the slope above the landing.
• The boat landing - where the Nam Ou boats tie up, and the town's main event of the day.

When to go

November to March is dry and the river is reliable. Boat schedules on the Nam Ou have been reduced since the dams went in and vary by season, so departures are worth confirming locally rather than assuming. Wet-season roads to the border can close.

Honest expectations

There is little to do here beyond wait, and one night is what the town is for. Boat services on the Nam Ou are not what they were and now run in segments; check before planning a route around them. Accommodation is basic and hot water is not universal.
